What this extension does

SynthID Detector is an independent third-party Chrome extension. It lets you select an image, or an area of a webpage, and check it for a Google SynthID watermark through synthid.com. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Google or Google DeepMind.

Data used to perform a check

When you choose “SynthID Detector” from the right-click menu, confirm a selection with “Check” in the extension's selection mode, or select Retry, the extension obtains the selected image. For an image on the page, it processes the image data, image source URL, a file name derived from that URL, and the service's detection result to perform the check and place a result card beside the image.

If you select an area of the page instead, the extension captures the visible part of the current tab only after you confirm, crops that capture in browser memory to the area you selected, and checks the cropped image under a generated file name based on the date and time. The full capture is discarded after cropping and is not stored or sent anywhere. A screenshot includes everything visible in the selected area, not only images.

The extension supplies the selected image or cropped screenshot and its file name to the upload control on synthid.com. That website uploads and processes the image through your existing signed-in browser session. The extension does not intentionally send the full image source URL to synthid.com as a separate field.

Image retrieval may use the browser's applicable credentials to access the image host. The extension does not read cookie values. It does not scan and submit all images on a page, and does not initiate checks automatically when a webpage loads. Page content scripts are present on permitted webpages to remember the right-clicked element and find the image under it, including images covered by overlays, to show the selection mode when you open it, to retrieve the selected image when requested, and to display the result. Finding the image happens locally in the page; its result is not sent anywhere unless you start a check.

Sign-in and account data

You sign in directly on synthid.com, in the same Chrome profile. You do not enter a Google password into this extension. To determine whether sign-in is required, the extension checks key names in synthid.com's local Firebase authentication storage. It does not read the account record values, passwords, or authentication tokens, and does not transmit those key names to the publisher.

Sharing and third-party processing

The image or cropped screenshot and its file name are sent to Google's synthid.com service solely to perform your requested check. When an image on the page is checked, its original host receives the request needed to retrieve the image. These third parties may process requests under their own terms and privacy notices. Consult the notices shown on synthid.com and the image host before submitting images.

The publisher does not operate an image-upload server for this extension. The current extension includes no analytics or advertising code and does not sell user data. It does not transfer user data for advertising, credit assessment, or uses unrelated to its stated image-checking purpose.

Storage and retention

The extension temporarily handles image data, screenshots, and results in browser memory. The result card stays on the originating page until it is closed or that page ends. A cropped screenshot is kept with its result card so that Retry can resubmit it, and is discarded when the card is closed or the page ends. Extension session storage contains only a temporary identifier for its synthid.com work tab, which is removed when the processing queue finishes. The extension does not create a persistent image library or detection history.

Normal browser caching and retention by synthid.com or the original image host are outside the extension's control. Closing a card or uninstalling the extension does not delete data previously submitted to a third-party service. Use that service's own controls and contact channels for questions about its retained data.

Your choices

You control which images are submitted by choosing the menu item, confirming a selection with “Check,” or selecting Retry. To avoid submitting an image or area, do not initiate its check; in the selection mode, press Esc or Cancel. You can close result cards and remove the extension through Chrome. Only submit images and areas you are authorized to share with Google; they may contain personal or confidential information.

Limited Use

Our use of data accessed through this extension complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. We limit data use and necessary transfers to the extension's disclosed image-checking purpose. We do not use or transfer this data for personalized advertising, data resale, or credit assessment. The publisher does not receive uploaded images through an extension backend or provide staff access to them through such a backend.
